Current distribution and disease association of Ixodidae (hard ticks) in Nigeria

Abstract Background This review documents the hard tick species that have been reported in Nigeria, their distribution, pathogens transmitted and disease they cause Nigeria; literature considered studies were conducted between 2000 2021. Main body The (Ixodidae) widely present country are those of genera; Amblyomma, Rhipicephalus/Boophilus, Hyalomma, Ixodes, Dermacentor Haemaphysalis among which, Amblyomma sp , Hyalomma Rhipicephalus sp. most reported. Ticks serious economic losses to livestock industry via negative impact on animal health general possible transmission zoonotic by some species. Ticks’ distribution is favoured factors which include uncontrolled cross-border movement animals, lack strict quarantine measures, extensive grazing suitable climatic condition. Tick-borne diseases commonly included Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, Theileriosis Ehrlichiosis while such as Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever Africa bite fever under-reported. Also, there paucity information these diseases. Measures implemented control ticks use acaricides extent vaccines. Conclusions tick-borne constitute important fully ascertain at national level recommended. need for identification other under-reported develop more integrated measures.
